Sunday
Today was our first Sunday production. It was quite hectic — we just came back from retreat, but everyone seemed to be working well together. I had to leave early because I had to attend a pastor friend's ordination service, but Sundays don't seem to be too bad.
Sunday schedules are weird because they begin at 11 a.m. and everything must be sent by 7 p.m. It does leave us time for homework on Sunday nights, though, which is good. I won't be doing very many Sunday updates because I go to church in the morning to the early afternoon. But Sundays should be fine since the assistant chief should be there.
That's all for now. Full week of production this week!

Quick Update
Our production times for this week so far:
Monday night: off for Labor Day Weekend
Tuesday night: approximately 12:30 a.m. We seem to always end up late on Tuesdays.
Tonight: Cut-off is midnight. Hopefully we'll have finals printed by then.
Republican National Convention coverage is keeping us up, much like the Democratic National Convention did. We ended a little after midnight each production day, except on Tuesday when we ended around 12:50 a.m.
Other than cutting it very close to deadline, our production today was not bad. I had to step out for a few hours, but my Assistant Chief Copy Editor stepped in. Catherine Lyon's article on the Palin's speech is very good. Read it.

It's been a week
My name is Hannah. I am the chief copy editor at the Daily Trojan, the daily newspaper at USC. If you find any errors in spelling, punctuation or grammar in the newspaper (because I won't care enough to check my posts thoroughly), it's either a part of AP style or my fault. That is if I haven't had a mental breakdown and missed a night of production.
I am going to keep a journal of my joys (and painful sorrows. Is that redundant?) at the Daily Trojan. It's going to be a rough semester. I'm going to read 12-24 pages of newspaper at least three times every night. I will be in a tiny little office from at least 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. from Mondays through Thursdays, with some afternoon hours on Sundays. I will have no time to do homework because all I'll want to do is sleep.
It will be a great experience. I will learn a lot about newspaper production and news judgment, but I will also learn what it feels like to not have a social life. Hopefully there won't be too many mistakes this semester. And when I look back on this semester, I will feel at least pretty good about what I've done. Thank you.
